 First Anniversary

First Anniversary Celebration

It is with great pride and a little bewilderment that I celebrate the first anniversary of thecookingbug.com.

My series of very occasional writings on all things food could use a boost and it seems only fair to reflect a little...

Medieval Masterpieces

Medieval MasterpiecesI have waxed lyrical before about my love of history and all things nostalgic and antiquarian... bear with me then as I wander down the historic path once more.
Good cooking outlasts its origins.
Wherever possible, I have embraced this ethos and sought out the weird and wonderful recipes of the past

Calorie Counting

Calorie CountingI was asked recently what I would wish for if I ever encountered a Genii in my kitchen ... I have decided I would wish for a full reimbursement for every penny I have ever spent on food. I don't dare actually count up how much this treasure would amount to, however I think I could comfortably live out my days without ever having to don the garb of work again. I am frequently flabbergasted how the cost of food fluctuates ...

Culinary Challenges

Culinary ChallengesIf there is one constant in my adult life (other than food) it is shopping at markets, opportunity shops and antiquarian warehouses. I love the enterprise of it all, the banter, the imprecision, the unpredictable, yet predicably varied breadth of it all. I love ferreting about for treasure, hunting down a particular prey and filling a niche that hitherto did not exist. Most of all I love finding old cooking books – all the better if they have hand written notes, recipes and dedications inside ...

Eating History

Eating HistoryThe longer I linger in the kitchen, the more I feel a sense of identity and belonging. With every scrap of a recipe saved from an ancient notebook, with every hand-written annotation in a gardening book, every gravy stain and sticky page I feel more and more connected to the unending line of history behind us. In every kitchen there is a promise of ingenuity and daring that has allowed so many people to embrace cookery with creativity and enthusiasm, to catch the cooking bug ...

Venerable Vegetables

Venerable VegetablesHow can a vegetable be fashionable?  That is a genuine question.  I understand that when a new fruit or vegetable is discovered, as with the pineapple in the 18th Century,  there is a flurry if interest, yet how is it that some veges now seem more at home in a museum than on a dinner plate.  A few years ago I was unable to buy parsnips – how absurd.  Thankfully they have since made a triumphant return, though  I am still fighting to return the turnip to the table ...

Time, Place, Memory

Time, Place, MemorySo much of what we absorb and retain as memory is linked to the emotion of the event – that first step onto foreign soil, childhood parties, romantic dinners, shared family occasions. For me food I have tasted on holiday carries with it all the freedom and excitement of travel, recreating foods from afar profoundly appeals to my innate sense of nostalgia, as does cooking from another era ...
